Air Leakage Basics

What Is Air Leakage?

Air leakage is when outdoor air enters a building through cracks or doors. It can also be referred to as infiltration. In warm weather, humid air can enter a home. In cold weather, warm, moist air can also enter the home. The moisture entering the home can often lead to mold.

Benefits of A Tight Home air leakage in home

An energy efficient home offers several benefits. Some benefits of a tight home include:

  1. Save Money- With less heat loss, homeowners can expect to have lower heating bills.
  2. Comfortable Home- With fewer drafts in a home, it will likely improve the comfort of a home.
  3. Safe Home Environment- Moisture is less likely to come into your home, reducing the chances of mold.
  4. More Energy Efficient Home- A home is more likely to have a better ventilation system. It may also use a smaller heating and cooling system.

Where To Inspect

It is important to inspect both the inside and outside of your home. On the outside, look for areas where different materials meet. For example, inspect exterior corners or where your home’s foundation and bottom of siding or brick meet. On the inside of your home, check for any areas where cracks and gaps could cause air leaks. Some areas include electric outlets, door/window frames, vents/fans, etc. For more areas to inspect, click HERE.
