International Energy Conservation Code Overview

International Energy Conservation CodeThe International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) – What is it and what does it do? The International Energy Conservation Code was established in 2000 by the International Code Council. It is a model code used by jurisdictions for the formation of minimum design and construction requirements. Ultimately, achieving a quantifiable level of energy efficiency. Code officials, internationally, saw the need for an up-to-date energy conservation code. They wanted this code to focus on determining the most cost-effective way to build homes and businesses. The goal was to not only meet the performance expectations and goals of today’s world but also include the design and material integration that is desired. The IECC is designed to ultimately meet these needs. How? Through model code regulations that will result in the use of inexhaustible resources and fossil fuel in all communities, no matter the size.

Benefits of the IECC

There are multiple benefits of the International Energy Conservation Code including the following:

Through building energy codes, there is a multitude of diverse people who truly benefit. These people include consumers and homebuyers, the construction industry, code officials, utilities, and state and local governments. With the use of strong building codes, we can overall ensure that buildings reduce energy use, cost less to operate, and are healthy and comfortable for the occupants.

Today's IECCToday’s IECC

The 2018 IECC is known for a number of things. First and foremost, conservation. This is due to the fact that it is known for addressing the design of energy-efficient building envelopes as well as the installation of energy-efficient systems. Second, for its ease of use. It uses the same simple format provided in all I-Codes. Third, for its embrace of new technology. This is due to the IECC always striving for innovation. Fourth, its correlation. The IECC directly correlates with ICC’s family of codes. And finally, its honest code development process. The IECC revises every three years through ICC’s well reputable consensus code development process. With the upcoming IECC developments, we can only expect additional benefits as new incorporations are always in search of.
